I didn’t mean to give up drinking.
I didn’t make a big announcement or set a milestone.
I didn’t get a sobriety app or start counting down.
But here I am… 1000 days without alcohol.
No Malbec. No Merlot. No Aperol. No mess. And honestly? I’ve never felt more myself.
This wasn’t a decision. It was a becoming.
When the wine goes, the mask goes too
I used to be that girl, the Queen of Red. The one always up for a cheeky prosecco, bottomless brunch, airport G&T.
Drinking was part of the performance. Part of the identity. Part of what helped me survive divorce, heartbreak, and the gnarly mess of reinvention.
But somewhere along the line, the buzz stopped working.
The hangovers weren’t just physical, they were emotional.
I started realising that alcohol wasn’t helping me feel like myself. It was helping me avoid myself.
It’s not about sobriety. It’s about self-concept
This isn’t a conversion story. I’m not anti-drink and I’m not here to preach.
What I am here to talk about is who you become when you stop blurring the edges.
I thought I was fun, confident, and flirty when I drank. Turns out, I was just temporarily silenced, and wine helped me make that feel okay.
The moment I took the glass away, all those parts of me I’d numbed came rushing back in. Scary at first, but also deeply, beautifully real.
That’s what reinvention does, it calls you into integrity.
What 1000 Days Taught Me (That Has Nothing To Do With Alcohol)
I trust myself more when I remember what I said
I make better decisions (especially on Tinder, let’s be real)
I don’t apologise for leaving early or not drinking, I just leave
I’ve stopped outsourcing fun, safety, or sexiness to a bottle
And most importantly… I like the woman I wake up to.
Rituals still matter. Just not the way you think. I haven’t let go of the glass. I still pour sparkling drinks into my stemmed wine glasses, add garnishes, light a candle.
But now the ritual isn’t about escaping. It’s about remembering.
Because when you stop drinking (intentionally or not) you meet yourself in a new way.
And the mirror can be confronting. But also? It’s bloody liberating.
Want the full story?
This week’s episode of The Reinvention Era podcast goes deep into the real story of how I accidentally hit 1000 days without alcohol… and what shifted in my brain, body, and identity along the way.
What we’re reading this month in the Badass AF Book Club
If this post hit somewhere it wasn’t supposed to (or maybe somewhere it needed to) you’ll want to join us inside the Badass AF Book Club.
This October we’re reading:
Girl, Stop Apologizing by Rachel Hollis
We’re talking ambition, guilt, and the quiet ways we still make ourselves small. This isn’t about becoming more, it’s about remembering who the f*ck you are.
Final Thought
You don’t have to quit drinking to change. But if something about your relationship with alcohol feels heavy, blurry, or not-quite-you anymore?
You’re allowed to get curious.
Start there.
Loads of love,
Sarah x
