Reinvention After the Empty Nest: Who Are You When They’re Gone?

by | 3 Oct 2025

If you’ve ever stood in your silent hallway, no muddy boots, no doors slamming, no one yelling ‘Muuuuum!’, and thought… “Now what?“, you’re not broken. You’re not alone. You’re just in the middle of a seismic life shift nobody warned you about.

The Real Empty Nest Hits Different

Forget the tidy Instagram version where you wave them off to uni with a proud tear and a homemade lasagne. The real empty nest doesn’t feel quite so poetic. It hits you in the goddamn chest.

It’s lying awake wondering where they are.

It’s checking your phone even though no one texted.

It’s standing in their doorway like you’ve lost your job… because, in a way, you have.

Your body is still wired for motherhood. Still scanning for danger. Still on duty. But there’s no one left to mother 24/7. And that ache in your chest? That’s not an overreaction. It’s grief. Real, physical, identity-shaking grief.

What Nobody Tells You

Your kids don’t leave once. They leave twice.

Once when they walk out the door. And again when you realise they’re no longer yours in the same way.

And you? You’re left holding space. And holding your breath.

So What Now?

This week’s episode of The Reinvention Era Podcast unpacks not just the grief… but what comes after. The reinvention that becomes possible because of the space they left behind.

Here’s where we start:

1. Let Yourself Grieve

Yes, even if you “knew it was coming.”
Yes, even if you wanted the peace.
You’re not overreacting. You’re adjusting to a whole new you.

2. Build a ‘Who I’m Becoming’ List

Forget the to-do list. Start with identity.

  • What does she believe?
  • What does she wear?
  • What does she no longer tolerate?

3. Start Small, But Start Now

  • Reclaim one room in your house just for you
  • Book a solo trip (yes, even to a Premier Inn)
  • Make a playlist called Her Next Chapter and dance while loading the dishwasher

4. Let the Old You Speak Again

Remember her?

The one who had ideas in the bath?
The one who loved slow mornings?
The one who didn’t disappear into the school run?

She’s still in there. Waiting for space. You just forgot what her voice sounded like.

Reinvention Doesn’t Have to Be Loud

This isn’t about a Bali retreat or quitting your job. Unless you want that.

This is about claiming tiny shifts that tell you….I matter again.

Wake up ten minutes earlier.
Put your phone down while you drink your coffee.
Say yes to something that scares you a little.

You don’t need a new life. You just need new rhythms.

You Will Never Feel Like You Again… Until You Start Choosing Like You Again.

Not ‘mum-you’. Not ‘default-you’.

Next. F*cking. Level. You.

That version of you isn’t a fantasy. She’s just waiting for the handover.

This one’s not about fixing yourself. It’s about finally seeing yourself again.
