The December Identity Crisis: Why This Month Messes With Your Head (And What To Do About It)

by | 5 Dec 2025

If you’ve ever hit December and suddenly found yourself spiralling into an existential crisis while holding a lukewarm mulled wine… congratulations.

You’re human. And you’re also bang in the middle of what I call the December Identity Crisis.

No one warns you about this bit. They warn you about last-minute shopping, chaotic family politics, and the office party where Gary from Finance does the worm… but no one mentions the internal “Who the hell am I?” meltdown that creeps in the moment the fairy lights go up.

But this is the month where every old role, every old version of you, every insecurity you thought you’d therapised to death… comes back for “one last chat.”

And it’s not because you’re weak. It’s because December is built to trigger every part of your identity in ways you don’t expect.

So let’s talk about it.

Why December hits you like a psychological snowplough

1. Old roles get reactivated

You can be a fully grown woman with boundaries and a mortgage and still walk into certain rooms in December and instantly feel twelve.

Suddenly you’re:

  • the “reliable one”
  • the “peacekeeper”
  • the “one who always sorts everything”
  • the “good girl who doesn’t cause waves”

Even if that’s not who you are anymore.

December is basically a reunion tour of identities you never signed up to revisit.

2. Social pressure is at an all-time high

Everyone else is wearing sequins. You’re wearing survival mode and hoping no one notices.

There’s this unspoken expectation that you should be:

  • Festive
  • Fun
  • Emotionally available
  • Socially sparkly
  • “Fine”

Meanwhile you’re just trying not to cry in the supermarket because someone rearranged the Quality Street tubs.

3. Life audits everywhere

The minute the calendar says December, your brain goes:

Right. Let’s review every choice you’ve ever made, every failure, every ex, every unfinished dream, and every bloody pound you didn’t lose. All at once.”

Rude.

4. It forces you to look at your actual life

Your relationships.
Your loneliness.
Your habits.
Your growth.
Your unmet needs.
Your boundaries.
Your patterns.
Your emotional energy.

December is a mirror… and sometimes we don’t like what it reflects.

So… what do you do when December makes you question everything?

You come home to yourself.

You stop performing.
You stop contorting.
You stop being the version of you that makes other people comfortable.

And you start asking:

“What do I need right now? And how do I want to feel as I move into the next year?”

This is where reinvention begins. Not in the new year, not in a green smoothie cleanse, not in a frantic list of resolutions.

Reinvention begins in the moment you realise:

I’m allowed to change.
I’m allowed to outgrow things.
I’m allowed to take the mask off.

And December, as chaotic as she is, gives you the perfect doorway into that next era.

If you want the honest, funny, raw version… this week’s podcast goes all in

This week on The Reinvention Era Podcast, I’m talking about the full emotional circus of December:

  • why you feel the identity wobble
  • why your brain goes negative
  • how to hold your energy when everything feels “too much”
  • what it actually means to shift into a new version of yourself
  • and how to not lose yourself in the middle of festive chaos

It’s real, relatable, sweary, comforting, and full of those perspective shifts you need as you inch toward your next chapter.
