Vision in the Messy Middle: How to Create Clarity When You Feel Lost

by | 2 Jan 2026

There’s this weird lie we’ve all been sold.

That clarity comes before action.
That you should know exactly what you want before you start moving.
That if you feel lost, confused, or unsure, you’re somehow doing life wrong.

Spoiler alert: you’re not.

You’re probably just in the messy middle.

That uncomfortable in-between space where you’ve outgrown who you were, but who you’re becoming hasn’t fully landed yet. Where the old identity doesn’t fit anymore, but the new one feels blurry, half-formed, and a bit scary.

And instead of celebrating that as growth, we panic.

We call it being stuck.
We call it failure.
We call it “I need to get my sh*t together.”

But what if the messy middle isn’t the problem?

What if it’s actually where vision begins?

Why feeling lost isn’t a sign you’re failing

If you’re feeling untethered right now, here’s what’s usually happening underneath the surface:

  • You’re no longer willing to live on autopilot
  • The roles you’ve played for years are starting to chafe
  • You’re tired of holding everything together for everyone else
  • You can feel something shifting… even if you can’t name it yet

That’s not breakdown energy.
That’s identity change.

Most high-achieving women don’t burn out because they’re weak. They burn out because they’ve been living from an identity that no longer fits. The “good girl.” The competent one. The one who copes.

So when that identity starts to collapse, it feels disorientating. Like you’ve lost your map.

You haven’t.

You’re just between destinations.

Vision doesn’t come after clarity. It creates it.

Here’s where the self-help industry has really done us dirty.

Vision isn’t:

  • a five-year plan
  • a perfectly curated Pinterest board
  • a “new year, new you” personality transplant

Vision is direction, not certainty.

It’s less about what you’re doing and more about who you’re becoming.

And that’s why so many women avoid it.

Because real vision work asks uncomfortable questions:

  • What am I done tolerating?
  • Where have I been choosing safety over truth?
  • Who am I pretending to be to keep the peace?

If you answer those honestly, you can’t un-see the gap between the life you’re living and the life you want.

So instead, we stay busy.
We over-function.
We tell ourselves we’ll think about it “when things calm down”.

(They never do)

The messy middle is not a failure phase

Think of it like this.
You’ve shed an old skin.
But the new one hasn’t hardened yet.

Everything feels raw. Awkward. Emotional. You might notice:

  • You’re more tired than usual
  • You’re less tolerant of nonsense
  • You don’t want what you used to want
  • You crave space, peace, and honesty

That’s not you falling apart.

That’s you outgrowing.

And vision in this phase doesn’t look like a crystal-clear plan. It often starts with something much quieter:

Permission.

Permission to say, I don’t know yet, but I’m willing to listen.

How to create vision when you feel lost

You don’t start with goals.
You don’t start with outcomes.
You start with truth.

1. Name what you’re done with
Vision sharpens through contrast. Ask yourself:

  • What am I no longer available for?
  • What drains me that I keep justifying?
  • What version of me am I retiring?

Write it down. Don’t sanitise it. This isn’t for Instagram. It’s for clarity.

2. Define how you want to feel
Before you decide what you want to do, decide how you want to be.

Calm. Grounded. Free. Steady. Proud.

If your current life doesn’t support those feelings, that’s not judgement. That’s data.

3. Meet your future self (without the fantasy)
Not the glossy version. The regulated one.

The woman who sleeps well, says no without panic, and trusts herself.

Ask her:

  • What do you no longer tolerate?
  • What matters now?
  • What do you wish I’d stop doing?

That’s not manifestation. That’s identity alignment.

4. Borrow the identity before the confidence
Confidence comes later. Courage comes first.

Ask: What would the woman I’m becoming choose here?
Then take one small action from that place.

That’s how vision becomes embodied.

You’re not behind. You’re becoming

If you’re reading this and thinking, this is me, I want you to hear this clearly:
You don’t need the whole plan.
You don’t need perfect clarity.
You don’t need to reinvent yourself from scratch.

You just need the next honest step.

Vision isn’t something you force.
It’s something you allow to emerge.

And the messy middle?

That’s not the gap between who you were and who you’ll be.

It’s the bridge.
