Why High-Achieving Women Feel Unfulfilled (And What Your ‘True Self’ Is Trying to Tell You)

by | 8 May 2026

Let’s get one thing straight.

You didn’t wake up one day and suddenly ‘lose yourself’ (as some would have you believe).

You didn’t accidentally drift away from who you are either. You didn’t just forget.

You unintentionally overrode her.

You became who worked for your life and everyone around you. The version of you that could handle all manner of sh*t. The one who gets results and keeps life moving.

You figured out really bloody quickly….

What gets approval
What avoids criticism
What keeps everything steady

And to be fair?

That version of you has done a damn good job. Because you’ve built the career, and become the responsible one who people can rely upon.

So this isn’t about tearing all that down.

But it is about asking a much more uncomfortable question….

Is that actually you… or just the version of you that got rewarded?

The Bit No One Talks About

High-functioning women don’t usually just ‘fall apart.’ They optimise instead. And refine, improve so that they generally just keep going. Plodding on.

Until one day, something sort of shifts.

Not always overly dramatically, but just enough to be really f*cking annoying.

A thought you can’t quite shake, like, ‘this isn’t quite it.’

And it’s not at all because your life is bad. But just because it’s… not fully yours.

The Identity That Built Your Life

At some point early on, you learned who to be. Maybe it was:

  • The clever one
  • The responsible one
  • The achiever
  • The one who never causes trouble
  • The one who holds everything together

And you leaned into it. Adapted to it. Hard. You went ALL in, because it worked.

But here’s the catch. That identity wasn’t designed for freedom.

It was designed for belonging, approval, and safety.

And those are not the same thing.

Enter: The Sovereign Self

Underneath all of that… There’s actually another version of you. Not the one who is proving. Nor the one holding everything together like a human Jenga tower. But rather, the one that just… is.

Your Sovereign Self.

Before you roll your eyes and think, ‘oh here we go…’

Stick with me. Because  this isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about recognising something that’s already there.

Inside of you.

Think of it like this.

An acorn doesn’t sit there questioning whether it should become an oak tree, does it?

It doesn’t attend a workshop.

It doesn’t read a book called “7 Steps to Becoming a Better Tree.”

It just grows.

Because the coding is already there.

Now imagine taking that same acorn… and sticking it in a dark corner of your kitchen.

No light.
No space.
No conditions to grow.

That acorn isn’t becoming anything.

Not because anything is wrong with it, but purely because it’s in the totally wrong environment.

But it’s still a goddamn acorn.

Still coded.

Just… not expressed.

That’s You

What if there’s a version of you… that already knows what you want?

What lights you up?

What you’re drawn to?

But instead of being supported… She got layered over with:

  • Expectations
  • Rules
  • Other people’s opinions
  • The need to be sensible
  • The need to be safe
  • The need to succeed

And then you built a life from that.

A good life, yes.

A functional life. Abso-f*cking-lutely.

A successful life. For sure, 100%.

But not necessarily a fully you life.

Why This Matters (More Than You Think)

This is why:

You can achieve the goal… and feel nothing
You can keep pushing… and still feel like something’s missing
You can have everything ‘on paper’… and yet still feel slightly out of sync

Because you’re building from a version of you that was designed to cope.

Not to express.

And that gap? That’s where the frustration lives.

The Subtle Clues You’ve Been Ignoring

Your Sovereign Self isn’t loud. She’s not kicking the door down demanding attention.

She shows up as:

  • A niggly pull you can’t quite explain
  • An idea you keep coming back to
  • A direction that doesn’t ‘make sense’… but sort of feels right
  • A thought you’ve talked yourself out of about 297 times

That’s not random. That’s data.

The Real Work

Now, this isn’t about quitting your job tomorrow and moving to Bali (unless of course you want to). It’s about something much more powerful.

It’s noticing:

Where am I choosing what makes sense… over what feels true?

Where am I still performing… instead of expressing?

Where am I living a life that works… instead of one that actually fits?

Because once you see that… Everything shifts.

Not overnight perhaps.

But still undeniably.

And This Is Where Reinvention Actually Starts

Not with a whole new colour coordinated planner.

Nor with more discipline either.

And definitely not with another morning routine you’ll abandon by Wednesday.

But with awareness.

And then… Choice.

Because you don’t find yourself.

You don’t fix yourself.

You remember who the hell you are… and then you decide.

Want to go deeper?

This is exactly what I break down in this week’s episode of the Reinvention Era podcast:

The Sovereign Self: Who You Were Before You Became Who You Had To Be
