Let’s just say it. The elephant in the room and all that.
You’ve done so much of the work, haven’t you?
You’ve read all the books.
Listened to podcasts on the daily.
Tried to ‘develop yourself’ in more ways than you can bloody count.
And yet…
You’re still operating at the same damn level.
And look, I know it’s not because you’re not capable. Nor because you’re not disciplined either.
Let me tell you a little secret.
It’s because you’ve been focusing on the wrong thing.
The Problem With Personal Development (That Nobody Else Seems To Talk About)
Most personal development is built on the idea that if you think better, you’ll do better.
So you work on your mindset.
You set new goals and create new habits.
You try your hardest to stay consistent and keep some momentum.
You push yourself to take action.
And look, don’t get me wrong. That all helps.
And for a while?
It works.
Until it doesn’t.
Until you slip back into the same old patterns.
The same decisions. The same behaviours.
And you start to think, ‘WTF is wrong with me?’
Well, you need to know that there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with you.
Nothing.
You’re just still being the same past version of you.
Why Nothing Changes (Even When You Try Everything)
The problem is, you don’t rise to meet your goals. You fall to the level of your identity.
And your identity is basically the set of beliefs, patterns, standards and behaviours you’ve repeated enough times that your brain now sees them as entirely ‘normal.’
So even if you consciously want something different…
Your brain is wired to keep you exactly where you are.
That’s because your brain doesn’t wholly care about you being happy, or developed, or fulfilled.
All it wants is for you to be safe and familiar.
Which is why:
- You continue to overthink instead of deciding
- You hesitate instead of just moving
- You stay where you are… even when you know there’s more for you
This is all just because you’re being consistent with who you believe yourself to be.
The Missing Piece: Identity Design
This is where I’ve found that everything changes.
Instead of asking, ‘how do I improve myself?’
You start asking, ‘who do I actually want to be?’
That’s identity design.
It’s the difference between:
- Trying to act confident… and being someone who naturally backs herself.
- Trying to be disciplined…and being someone who moves regardless.
- Trying to change your life…and being the person who creates a different one.
Why “Be Her Now” Actually Works
Most people wait.
‘I’ll do it when I feel ready.’
‘I’ll go for it when I’m more confident.’
‘I’ll become her… later.’
But that’s totally backwards.
You don’t become her when you’re ready.
You be her… and that’s what makes you ready.
Because identity is built through repetition.
Your current identity didn’t just appear overnight.
You repeated behaviours…
over and over again…
until your brain accepted them as the truth.
The same applies to your next level.
The Science Bit (Without the BS)
Your brain is constantly filtering information through something called the Reticular Activating System (RAS).
Its job?
Basically it’s to find evidence that supports what you already believe.
So if your identity is:
‘I’m not that confident’
‘I’m an overthinker’
‘I’m not the kind of person who does that’
Your brain will just keep finding the data to prove that right.
But when you start acting as your future self NOW?
Everything shifts in your favour.
Your brain starts looking for different evidence to back up who you are now.
Different behaviours = Different outcomes.
And over time…
That becomes your new normal.
What This Looks Like In Real Life
Identity design isn’t about blowing your whole life up, but about asking, in the small moments:
‘Who would she be here?’
And then choosing that.
Even when it feels unnatural.
Especially when it feels unnatural.
Because that’s how identity changes.
Not through thinking.
Through repetition.
The Real Shift
This isn’t about fixing yourself. FYI you’re not actually broken.
But it IS about deciding:
The version of me that got me here… is not the one who takes me next.
And then doing something about it.
Want to go deeper?
This blog only scratches the surface. In this episode of The Reinvention Era podcast, I break down exactly how identity design works and how to start becoming your next-level self now: Be Her Now: Why You Don’t Find Yourself… You Design Her
