Why Self-Leadership Is the Missing Piece for High Achievers
One of the biggest leadership problems I see in the women I work with isn’t poor communication.
Nor is it a lack of ambition or empathy, or a weak strategy.
Instead, it’s that people have become incredibly good at leading everyone else… whilst slowly abandoning themselves in the process.
They lead teams, businesses and clients.
They lead homes, families and children.
Even communities.
And that’s because they’re the reliable ones, right?
They’re the one everyone turns to when something (anything) needs sorting.
From the outside, they look successful AF.
Only inside, they’re exhausted.
And that’s because somewhere along the way, they stopped leading themselves.
Managing Yourself Isn’t the Same as Leading Yourself
Most high achievers are absolutely brilliant at management.
They manage their calendar.
Their inbox.
Deadlines.
Meetings.
Projects.
Responsibilities.
Etcetera. etcetera.
But self-leadership asks different questions.
Who am I choosing to be?
What kind of life am I building?
What am I no longer available for?
Where have I abandoned myself?
What decision am I avoiding because it feels uncomfortable?
That’s a completely different conversation.
The Survival Trap
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through years in social work, senior leadership and now working with founders is this:
High achievers often become experts at surviving.
The problem?
Survival doesn’t always actually look like struggling.
Sometimes it looks incredibly successful.
You wear it well because you’re organised, productive and busy and you’ve earned the respect.
So, people naturally assume you’re thriving, right?
Sometimes even YOU assume you’re thriving.
But underneath all of that is exhaustion. Complete and utter exhaustion.
And I find that exhaustion isn’t always caused by doing too much.
Sometimes it’s caused by repeatedly abandoning yourself.
Your Business (And Life) Won’t Outgrow You
If you’re a founder or business owner, this matters even more.
Because eventually every business bumps into the identity of the person leading it.
Your business won’t ever outgrow:
- your confidence
- your courage
- your standards
- your visibility
- your willingness to make difficult decisions
You can buy another course. Absolutely. Get yourself another coach or marketing strategy or AI tool.
But eventually your business always reaches the ceiling created by the person leading it.
That’s why I believe leadership starts long before strategy.
It starts with identity.
The Question That Changed Everything For Me
The last year has probably been one of the hardest of my life. (You can hear more about me on The Reinvention Era podcast).
I left a high-profile job without a new one to go to.
I shattered my arm, ended up having extensive surgery followed by a nasty infection.
I’ve navigated health challenges from Crohn’s Disease.
AND…. I’ve written a book, as well as started building an entirely different business.
People often ask me how I’ve kept going. And do you know what?
The answer isn’t motivation.
It’s asking myself one question over and over.
Who do I choose to be?
Not… What do I feel like doing?
Not… What’s easiest?
Not… What will everybody else think?
Who do I choose to be?
Because identity always, ALWAYS wins.
Leadership Has To Come Home
We spend so much time trying to become better at all these roles.
Leaders.
Parents.
Partners.
Managers.
Business owners.
But perhaps the greatest act of leadership isn’t leading everyone else better.
Perhaps it’s finally leading yourself.
Because you cannot lead a life you’ve abandoned.
