Why High-Achieving Women Struggle to Let Go of Control (And How to Reclaim Balanced Power)

by | 20 Feb 2026

There’s a very specific point in the mornings that most high-achieving women know all too well.

Your eyes open (even though it feels like you haven’t even slept), and as you reach over to press snooze, before your feet even touch the floor, your brain is already running through your entire life…

  • What needs doing
  • Who needs you
  • What could go wrong
  • What you need to manage, fix or anticipate

You haven’t even properly got up yet. And you’re already “switched on.”

Jaw slightly tight. Breath ever so shallow. Mind scanning the imaginary to-do list.

You might call it strength. It’s just what you do, right?

But what if it’s not capability…. what if it’s actually control?

The Hidden Cost of Being the Strong One

For many high-achieving women, this ‘control’ maybe doesn’t look like you might expect.

Because it looks competent.

Reliable.

Capable.

Driven.

And look, it’s built your career, helped you survive some super hard sh*t, and it’s turned you into you the woman everyone depends on.

But what if what once kept you safe can actually become what keeps you exhausted?

It’s not about being ambitious or independent or driven or anything else….

It’s about living in one energetic mode for too long.

Masculine and Feminine Energy: Not What You Think

Now, I’m just going to say this up front…. Masculine and feminine energy have nothing to do with gender.
They’re energetic modes that every human being has access to.

Masculine energy is about:

  • Direction
  • Structure
  • Decision
  • Action
  • Protection
  • Control

It’s “I’ve got this” energy.

Feminine energy is about:

  • Intuition
  • Creativity
  • Flow
  • Connection
  • Emotional processing
  • Receptivity

It’s “I can feel this” energy

Neither is better than the other.

But in my experience, high-achieving women can often default to masculine energy because it feels safer.

Why High-Achieving Women Default to Control

Why is that?

Well, because control is often really just trust that got so damn tired of being broken.

If you learned early that:

  • Relying on others wasn’t reliable
  • Being emotional didn’t get your needs met
  • Being capable kept things calm and didn’t rock the proverbial boat

Then of course you became:

  • The organised one
  • The reliable one
  • The leader
  • The fixer

And it works. Because masculine energy works brilliantly in crisis. It gets results.

But when it becomes your identity (not just your tool) burnout inevitably follows.

When Strength Turns Into Burnout

So how do you know if you’re over-living in control?

  • You struggle to relax
  • Stillness makes you restless AF
  • You plan rest like another task on the endless to-do list
  • You feel so much calmer when you’re being useful
  • You struggle to receive help (let alone ask for it)
  • You don’t know what you want necessarily… only what needs doing

You’re still functioning. As always.

Still achieving.

Still admired.

But you’re tired in a way sleep just doesn’t fix.

And that is your nervous system maxed out.

The Role vs Identity Trap

So many high-achieving women operate in environments that reward “red energy”… decisive, driven, results-focused leadership.

In frameworks like Insights Discovery, this might show up as dominant Red.

But the danger in over-functioning in this is that a role is not an identity.

If you’re not conscious of it, that energy you need for work starts following you home.

Into your relationships.
Into your rest.
Into your own goddamn head.

And suddenly, you don’t know how to switch off.

The Myth: If I Let Go, Everything Falls Apart

And the thing is, when that happens, you end up believing that there are ONLY two options….

Control everything
OR
Fall apart completely

But in reality, the opposite of control is NOT chaos.

It’s actually self-trust.

And self-trust is balanced power.

What “Queen Energy” Actually Looks Like

Balanced power (or what I call Queen energy) isn’t passive though. It’s regulated.

It looks like:

  • Boundaries without rigidity
  • Authority without aggression
  • Softness without self-abandonment
  • Decisiveness without force

It feels like:

  • Clarity without urgency
  • Confidence without armour
  • Leadership without white-knuckling

You don’t stop being powerful. You just stop gripping on for dear life.

How to Begin Rebalancing

This isn’t about becoming softer or losing your edge. It’s about becoming safer inside yourself.

Start by asking yourself:

  • Where am I controlling because I don’t trust?
  • Where has control kept me safe… and where is it costing me now?
  • Where do I act strong instead of feeling it?
  • Where could I allow instead of manage?

Awareness is the first shift.

Identity reinvention doesn’t require you to become someone else completely. It just asks you to stop living at the extreme.

To choose your energy… instead of being run by it.

You Don’t Need to Drop the Crown

High-achieving women don’t need to shrink. Good God no.

But they do need regulation.

They need self-trust.

They need balance.

You don’t need to let go of your power. You just need to stop carrying it like it weighs a ton in your Mulberry.

And that?

That’s where reinvention begins.
